    SharePoint Licensing

     Hi,

Can anyone throw me some light on the MOSS 2007 Licensing costs? I have gone through Microsoft site already but still it looks very unclear to me in some parts.

e.g. I have 5 groups in my company which work independently of each other. Each have their own MOSS environment and setup and sites. So, when we create a portal for SharePoint do we need to license for end users for each of the 5 implementations. What is the difference between MOSS Standard and Enterprise license with regard to CALs?

    Thanks,

    Shell

    Hi Shell,

Can I ask why you need 5 instances?  Why not a shared farm and logically separate the groups in another way?

    Hi Bob,

There are different instances because all are on different Reference architecture and all require variety oif features independent of each other. Plus they are supported by different groups.

    Thanks,

    Re: SharePoint Licensing

Most often I see this level of seperation for reasons of security (such as Intranet/Extranet), language and scalability.  I rarely see this type of seperation for different business units.  This approach will be very expensive and possibly an overkill.  However, if this is the approach you go with, I would highly recommend discussing this with your Microsoft rep; MSEA will be important here.

Are each of these farms sharing the same SQL server?

    Hi  Bob,

I agree that this is very different SharePoint implementation, but that is how I have to deal here!!! We have one farm setup for our BU and we have 3-4 application live on that. My question is that, we have only 10,000 licenses (CAL) for users so in the same farm they can access any application right? Or they have to have different licenses for each applications if users are same?

Also, does Enterprise CAL eliminates the per user license and gives a lumpsum number for the same?

    Thanks,

    Shell

    Hi Shell,

I don't think you will need to purchase more CAL's; just multiple server licenses.
