List size and column widths

For lists with a number of columns the available screen size is very small. Is there any way you can increase the area in which a list can be viewed e.g. open in a new window with minimal Sharepoint bars. Also is it possible to set the column widths in lists so all users get a consistent view.

You can certainly open new content in windows with JavaScript and lock down column widths by setting specific styles in your master page.
