Site Templates and SharePoint Designer

Hi there -

I'm interested in using SharePoint Designer to make simple modifications to the templates that I'm going to use for our Sharepoint site.  In looking through the descriptions of sites on  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/HA101744911033.aspx?pid=CH101181201033 I have noticed that the "Blank Site" is the only one that they recommend using with Sharepoint designer.  Would it be possible for me to create a "Team Site" or some type of publishing site and use SharePoint Designer to just make a few changes to these pages?

Yes of course. I believe they just mention SP Designer there as an example.
