Since the DFWP is created with SPD, that is the best way to support it. The only things you can change from the Web UI is the XSLT and the parameters.

Good info Raymond, thank you. Quick question, as DFWP is created by SharePoint Designer, how would supporting or maintaining a DFWP be approached? Would we be needing Designer for DFWP on our sites?

Very clear post..looking forward to the remaining ones..I find the DFWP really powerful but highly under-utilized in most companies I work for, most people have no idea how useful it is.
